K-Movies Set to Invade Summer Box Office Dominated by Hollywood

From Brad Pitt in ‘F1 The Movie’ to dinosaurs in ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and ‘Superman,’ Hollywood films have dominated the summer box office. Now, highly anticipated South Korean films are making their way to theaters. Tentpole films with strong box office potential, ‘Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint’ and ‘The Devil Has Moved In,’ are set to be released on the 23rd and August 13th, respectively.

What’s particularly notable is the active presence of actresses from K-pop girl groups. Girls’ Generation’s Im Yoon-ah, After School’s Nana, and BLACKPINK’s Jisoo will be meeting audiences on the big screen.

Im Yoon-ah is returning with her new film ‘The Devil Has Moved In’ three years after ‘Confidential Assignment 2: International’ (2022). This marks her first time taking on the title role in a film since her big-screen debut with ‘Confidential Assignment’ (2017). The movie is a comedy about the chaotic events involving Seon-ji (Im Yoon-ah), who transforms into a devil-like, uninhibited figure every dawn, and Gil-gu (Ahn Bo-hyun), a young unemployed man who takes on a part-time job monitoring her.

In the film, Im Yoon-ah showcases two different sides. By day, she’s an ordinary and innocent bakery owner, but by night, she transforms into a completely different, rough persona. Her fully uninhibited comedic acting is a fresh change. Im Yoon-ah stated, “This is by far the most uniquely bizarre character I’ve ever played. To show a completely different side, I paid close attention to my voice tone, expressions, and even laughter. I’m excited to see the audience’s reaction.”

Nana and Jisoo Take on Intense Action Role

Nana and Jisoo will be performing intense action sequences in ‘Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.’ Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, this fantasy film is set when the world of the novel ‘Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World,’ which had been serialized for over 10 years, becomes reality on the day it concludes. It depicts the struggle of Kim Dok-ja (Ahn Hyo-seop), the novel’s sole reader, as he helps the protagonist Yoo Joong-hyuk (Lee Min-ho) and his companions survive in the ruined world.

In the film, Nana plays Jung Hee-won, a character from the novel who survives with Dok-ja’s help and fights for justice. Nana, who has been consistently active since the drama ‘The Good Wife’ (tvN, 2016), explained her reason for appearing: “The way ordinary people unite to save the world felt very cool to me.”

She also personally performed all of the high-difficulty action scenes. Nana said, “I dedicated myself to practicing so I could show the lines and power of the action as much as possible. The exhilaration of the wire action, in particular, was incredible.”

Jisoo is making what is effectively her screen debut. Her only previous film appearance was a special appearance in ‘Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman’ (2023). Having showcased romance acting in dramas like ‘Snowdrop’ (JTBC, 2021-2022) and ‘Newtopia’ (Coupang Play, 2025), she takes on action in this new project. She plays Lee Ji-hye, a high school student who follows Joong-hyuk and calls him her master.

Jisoo shared, “I developed the character by discussing the character’s backstory, which wasn’t explicitly in the script, with the director. I tried my best to express the character’s quick grasp of reality amidst constantly changing situations.”
